![]() ![]() ![]() The lore surrounding the “curse” on each side of the battle tells the same story- a curse was wrought unto the vampires/humans that they must kill the vampire lord/Chief hunter in order for the other species to survive. I loved the set-up with Floriane’s heritage as the Forge Maiden, and Ruvan’s inheritance of the title Vampire Lord. For me, this is the first one that I had trouble buying into. I’m a big fan of Elise Kova’s and love the way she crafts her fantasy novels. She runs to the front lines and comes face to face with the Vampire Lord. When the time comes and Floriane drinks the draft it gives her super powers, including increased hearing and she can hear her brother scream. When the evening arrives, her brother brings her a magical draft and tells her to drink it that night as it will give her strength in case a vampire breaks through their forces. Floriane’s twin brother will fight for the first time and as he has been secretly training Floriane, she will stay behind and protect their mother. It’s her job to forge all of the silver blades that will be used to hopefully slay the Vampire Lord when he arrives with the Blood Moon to try to gain access to Hunter’s Hamlet and kill them all. ![]() Technically, A Duel with the Vampire Lord is the third book in the Married to Magic series, but as each of these books are stand alone novels, they can be read independently, without having to read the others in the series first.įloriane is the Forge Maiden in Hunter’s Hamlet. ![]() ![]() ![]() “One consequence of all of this has been a severe erosion of democracy, an immediate consequence of sharp concentration of wealth and business power. ![]() It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind”Ĭonsequences of Capitalism: Manufacturing Discontent and Resistance ![]() “In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons … who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government, which is the true ruling power of our country.” Some people might now call that the deep state. “The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. ![]() ![]() ![]() Who is Jo Freeman? Jo Freeman, University of Chicago Student, Image: University of Chicago In that context, reading Jo Freeman’s “The Tyranny of Structurelessness” is still relevant today. So when some of the French “Yellow Vests” wish to coordinate their efforts, they face some burning questions: who are you representing? why do you think you can make decisions? what is your agenda? It relates to one of the most difficult problems an organiser has to face: how to structure a group of equals. This radical choice has a price: when everyone is equal, everyone is equally accountable, which means no one is in charge. Structures separate people and give them a different status: Why would anyone build a hierarchy in their own social movement? By rejecting those structures, activists create spaces where everyone is equally welcomed and given a chance to participate in any way they like. Why? Because they feel a formal structure goes against one of their core values: equality. They all are reluctant to organise themselves in a formal way. ![]() What do the French “Yellow Vests”, the activists of “Occupy” and the Spanish “Indignados” have in common? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() What can the invention of the high five and the history of "cool" tell us about the origins of awesome? Can introverts be awesome? How do our expectations of awesome relate to race, gender, and sexuality? How is our desire for awesomeness shaping our cultural landscape - art, altruism, athletics, and public life? These are just a few of the questions Riggle explores in this accessible, philosophical road trip through the ethos of our time. To be down, game, chill, basic, wack, or a preference dictator are just a handful of ways we can create, respond to, or fail to take up social openings in the office, in public, or with our friends and loved ones. We suck when we foil their attempts at creative community building. In this engaging, fun, and astute investigation of a thoroughly contemporary condition, philosopher and former pro skater Nick Riggle argues that our collective interest in being awesome (and not sucking) marks a new era in American culture, one that is shaped by relatively recent social, political, and technological shifts.Īt the core of his work is the idea that awesome people are exemplars of social creativity. Instead of acting as investors of first resort, far too many governments have become passive lenders of last resort, addressing problems only after they arise.
